Northern Arena: Gym Access Control with ZKTeco TS1000

Northern Arena

QR-based member entry through a ZKTeco TS1000 turnstile

Northern Arena - Turnstile Installation - ZKTeco TS1000

Northern Arena, a Silverdale swim school and gym fitness facility, needed a practical way to manage gym member entry through its membership system. NZTeco helped provide a turnstile access setup using a ZKTeco TS1000 tripod turnstile, zkteco qr600 reader, Inner Range Inception access control and Hapana gym software. The result is a straightforward QR-based entry flow that connects member check-in with physical access control.

Northern Arena is a Silverdale, Auckland swim school and gym fitness facility with gym, pool and class-based membership options. To support gym member entry, NZTeco helped provide a turnstile access control setup using a ZKTeco TS1000 tripod turnstile, zkteco qr600 reader, Inner Range Inception access control and Hapana gym software.

The goal was simple: give members a quick QR-based check-in process, while still controlling physical access through a proper turnstile system.

The challenge

Gym and fitness facilities need access control that works with the way memberships are managed. It is not just about locking a door. The system needs to support active memberships, member check-ins, staff oversight and a smooth experience at the entry point.

For Northern Arena, the requirement was to connect gym member access with Hapana, while using reliable physical entry control at the facility. The existing case study notes the need for a system that could work with Hapana and provide quick, secure access for members.

The solution also needed to suit a real gym environment, where people may be entering before or after classes, between pool and gym sessions, or during busy periods.

The solution

NZTeco supplied a ZKTeco-based turnstile access setup built around:

Integration with Inner Range Inception Access Control System

This system was selected for its advanced features and ability to integrate smoothly with the ZKTeco TS1000.
The TS1000 provides the physical pedestrian control point. The QR600 reads the member’s QR credential. Inception provides the access control layer, and Hapana supports the gym membership and check-in side of the workflow.

This type of setup is useful for gyms because it separates the job of each system. Hapana manages the member relationship and check-in flow. The access control system manages the entry decision. The turnstile controls the physical passage.
This company is simply Amazing and I am now a raving fan. The team at NZTeco have gone so far above and beyond what I had expected, their support and communication make it so easy to do business with them, they honestly have helped us so much not only during installation but throughout the entire journey from recommending the right product pre-sale to finding solutions after installation. I would give them 10 stars if I could. LOOK NO FURTHER, THESE GUYS ARE AWESOME DEFINATELY USE THIS COMPANY

How the system works

In simple terms, the member presents a QR code at the entry point. The QR600 reads the QR code and passes the credential into the access control workflow. When access is approved, the TS1000 turnstile releases for member entry.

The TS1000 is designed as a compact single-lane tripod turnstile for controlled pedestrian access. ZKTeco’s brochure describes the TS1000 series as a compact entrance control system designed for high-traffic volume, with arms that normally remain locked and release after a valid credential is recognised. The same brochure also notes that the arms drop during emergencies or power outages to allow clear exit.

The QR600 is a QR code and RFID reader series with metal housing, IP65 protection, QR/RFID support and Wiegand/RS485 communication options. That makes it suitable for access control projects where a QR reader needs to connect into a wider controller-based system.

Inner Range Inception provides the controller layer. Inner Range describes Inception as a web-based hardware solution combining access control, intruder detection and automation, with setup and operation through a browser-based interface.

Why this worked for Northern Arena

This was a practical fit because the solution matched the site’s membership-based environment.

For a gym, a turnstile does more than open and close. It creates a clear entry point, helps control pedestrian flow, and gives staff a more consistent way to manage member access. For members, QR access keeps the entry process familiar and simple.

It also avoids overcomplicating the front end. Members do not need to understand the access control system. They only need to present the correct QR code.

The result

The published project page says the integration helped Northern Arena manage member entry more effectively, while improving convenience for gym members. The customer feedback on the original page also specifically praised NZTeco’s support and communication, saying it made the company “easy to do business with”.

The strongest result to publish is not a made-up percentage or inflated ROI claim. The real value is that the system connected membership software with physical entry control in a way that suited a working gym environment.

Key outcomes:

  • QR-based member entry
  • Physical entry control through a tripod turnstile
  • Integration with Hapana gym software
  • Access control handled through Inner Range Inception
  • A member-friendly workflow at the gym entry point
  • Practical support from NZTeco during the project

Project summary

Northern Arena’s gym access control project is a good example of keeping the entry workflow practical. The member uses a QR code. The reader captures the credential. The access controller manages the entry decision. The turnstile controls the physical passage.

For gyms, swim schools, recreation centres and membership-based facilities, this type of setup can be a clean way to connect gym software with controlled pedestrian entry.

FAQs

Yes. In many projects, the membership platform manages the member record, while the access control system manages the physical entry decision. The exact method depends on the software, controller and integration options available.

A turnstile gives a clearer physical entry point. It helps guide member flow and makes the access process more visible than a standard reader on a door.

Yes. QR code access can be useful for gyms and membership-based sites because members can present a QR credential from a phone or membership system. The reader and controller setup still needs to be designed correctly.

No. The QR600 range supports QR code and RFID card reading, with Wiegand and RS485 communication options depending on the model and setup.

The main items are entry width, available power, network/controller location, membership software, credential type, expected traffic flow, emergency egress requirements and whether the turnstile is indoor or outdoor.
