The Recovery Lounge (AUT Millennium) — Controlled Access with Facial & Palm Recognition

The Recovery Lounge at AUT Millennium uses ZKTeco SpeedFace M4 with facial and palm recognition to control staff and member access.

ProjectOverview

Client

The Recovery Lounge, located inside AUT Millennium, is a specialised recovery facility focused on athlete performance and rehabilitation.

AUT Millennium is a high-performance training hub used by elite and amateur athletes, offering world-class facilities including pools, gyms, and sports science services. The Recovery Lounge complements this by providing access to recovery technologies such as compression therapy, cold exposure, and other performance-focused treatments.

The situation

The Recovery Lounge needed a way to control access to a restricted recovery area within a busy, shared facility.

Key challenges:

  • Managing both staff and paying members
  • Restricting general public access from the wider AUT Millennium facility
  • Providing a fast, touchless entry experience suitable for athletes
  • Avoiding cards or fobs that could be lost, shared, or forgotten

The Solution

We supplied a biometric access control system designed for controlled environments with mixed user groups:

Hardware

  • 2 × ZKTeco SpeedFace M4 terminals
    • Facial recognition
    • Palm recognition (touchless option)
    • Fast authentication for high-traffic entry points

Software

  • ZKBio CVAccess
A modern web-based access control platform used to:
    • Manage staff and member access
    • Assign access levels and schedules
    • Monitor entry logs and activity

How it works in practice

  • Main entry door:
Controlled access point limiting entry to authorised users only (staff + approved members)
  • Authentication methods:
    • Facial recognition for quick, seamless entry
    • Palm recognition as a touchless alternative
  • User groups:
    • Staff: full access
    • Members: access limited to valid sessions or approved timeframes
  • Management:
Admins use CVAccess to quickly add/remove users and adjust permissions as needed.

Why this approach works

  • No cards or apps required
Users don’t need to carry anything — ideal for athletes moving between training and recovery.
  • Fast throughput
Facial recognition keeps entry smooth, even during peak periods.
  • Touchless operation
Palm recognition provides a hygienic option in a shared recovery environment.
  • Clear control in a shared facility
Ensures only authorised users enter the Recovery Lounge, even within a busy sports complex.

Outcomes

  • Improved access control without disrupting user flow
  • Reduced admin overhead (no lost cards or reissues)
  • Better user experience for athletes and members
  • Secure separation from the wider AUT Millennium facility

Technology snapshot
