ZKTeco OP1000: Optical Turnstile for Touchless Control

The ZKTeco OP1000 is a barrier-free optical turnstile ? active infrared beams between two SUS304 stainless pedestals detect unauthorised passage and trigger an audible alarm. No physical arms, no flaps, no swing barriers. Suits high-throughput NZ corporate HQs, university libraries, transport hubs and large hospital staff entries where queue speed and reception aesthetics matter more than hard physical stopping.

Description

Optical turnstiles use infrared sensors instead of physical barriers. The advantages are throughput speed and visual openness ? an OP1000 lane handles around 60 people per minute and looks like an architectural detail rather than a security gate. The trade-off is that there’s nothing physical stopping a determined unauthorised entry ? alarms fire, but the person can still walk through.

When optical is the right choice (and when it isn’t)

  • Pick optical when: Throughput speed matters more than physical denial; the site has security staff who respond to alarms; the architecture is reception-led and physical barriers feel out of place; tailgating is the main concern, not unauthorised entry.
  • Pick tripod (TS-series) when: Physical denial matters; the site is utilitarian (industrial, factory shift entry); budget is tighter.
  • Pick flap or swing barrier (FBL/SBTL) when: You want both physical denial and modern aesthetics ? the middle ground between optical and tripod.

Where the OP1000 earns its keep in NZ

  • Auckland and Wellington corporate HQs: Banks, insurance, consulting and law firm receptions where visual openness matters.
  • University libraries and main entries: High-throughput student-card reads at peak times between classes.
  • Airport and transit hubs: Staff entries with sustained peak throughput.
  • Large hospital staff entrances: Multi-lane shift-change throughput at major DHB facilities.
  • Premium hotel staff entries: Back-of-house entries that need to look as good as front-of-house.
  • Major event and stadium staff entry: High-throughput member-of-staff entries on event days.

Specifying it

  • Detection: Active infrared beams between pedestals ? invisible electronic field detects passage events.
  • Alarm response: Audible alarm on unauthorised entry plus relay output for guard-station notification.
  • Reader options: Optional RFID, fingerprint and other readers integrate into the cabinet top.
  • Construction: SUS304 stainless steel cabinet ? corrosion-resistant for indoor environments.
  • Throughput: Around 60 people per minute under steady flow.
  • Mounting: Indoor only ? IR detection degrades in direct sun.
